Evaluation report about expedition STORM

27.2.2007 Report Of the Second Expedition of the Project TAIGA
( Gymnasium Dobris, the Czech Republic )

We realized our second learning expedition within the scope of project TAIGA from 24.1. to 28.1.2007.

We left Dobris at 13:30. In Prague we had to change the coach to our distant destination - a tiny village in the middle of the Sumava mountains called Kvilda.
The program of this event was determined exactly, nevertheless especially students weren't sure what to expect. They were afraid of the fact that they would have to pass most of excursions on cross-country skis. But this fear was unnecessary, cause most of them found out they were talented cross-country skiers and the negative conditions ( which we were in ) didn't influence them.
Unfortunately, the hurricane Kyrril attacked our country a few days before our departure and that made our leaders feel a litle bit frightened. This Hurricane spoilt very big part of our republic including the Sumava mountains. However, we soon learnt how powerful and strong the nature can be and that man can do only little.
The way wasn't without problems because of the snow storm and a crazy bus driver who didn't hesitate to overtake cars and trucks in unbelievable positions. Nevertheless we arrived alive and healthy in Kvilda at 18:00 where for our happiness our old friend and guru mrs. Sudkova was waiting. She is the owner of a beautiful and perfectly equipped cottage in the surrounding of Kvilda.
This person lent us this beautiful cottage to use. And it isn't everything. During our stay in Kvilda she was very helpful and she tried to do everything what we wanted and when we wanted. I think that everybody must remember this middle-age a hyperactive-woman, who was very similar to our nice grandmothers.

Next morning we started full of power and resolution. Our way aimed to the state frontiera and our trip destination was the residues of pine-fir-forest around riverhead of the Vltava and also original beech-woods on Bucina. But we had only very sad sight at a big burial place of beautiful trees and a little remaining gowth.

Next day we had a lecture about the history of the Sumava in the centre for Information. Students got to know something about the National park Sumava, about natural ecosystems in this park and about its protection.

Then we went to see all that in our own eyes. We went across Horska Kvilda, around Hamersky potok and then around Antygl - Trijezerni slat - Modrava - Filipova hut - Kvilda. We returned only at night.

The third day we went on cross-country skis again : Hurka - Prilba - Na Mokrine - Kvildsky les. Unfortunately this area was destroyed by winds and now it isn't accessible for public for many years. Especially Kvilda forest doesn't exist any more. When the fallen trees are exploited sometimes, it will be pretty plateau. It's as these areas are important supply and spring area.
In the evening several lectures. Students listened to very exhausted but very instructive lecture Mr. Kamil Korejs : How to overlive in the mountains.

Last day we went along the Warm Vltava. We say the monument of all Sumava rafters who died during tough work, and we visited the monument of King of Sumava to all people who had to leave the Czech Republic illegaly in the last regime.

Fulfilled programme:
 - Description of fauna and flora around Kvilda

At the end of this message I would like to thank Kamil Korejs and Vladimír Škarvada for their invaluable help with preparations, planning and realisation of the expedition. Without their contribution this plan would have never come into being. Thanks also to the cookery of Vladimír. Without him this expedition would have cost much more money and some people would have probably died of hunger. I also have to appreciate the access of all students. Last but not leasts thank to all parents for trust.
